Allianz stadion – SK Rapid

History

Allianz stadion (contract was signed with Allianz until 2025) is the new stadium of SK Rapid Wien. It was being built on the site of the former Gerhard Hanappi stadium, it is just rotated to lie on the north-south axis. Demolition of the old stadium began in early October in 2014, after a ceremonial farewell with thousands of fans.

Opening of new, Allianz stadion, was with pre-season friendly match between SK Rapid and FC Chelsea on 16th of July 2016. Rapid won 2-0. Luckily for me, I got a chance to be present at grand opening of new Allianz stadion and it was really spectacular. Its capacity is 28.000 seats of which 2000 are business and VIP seats. The stadium boasts 41 corporate boxes plus two event boxes each with a spacious 87 square meters. Construction cost was around 53 million €. There’s one interesting thing at the new Allianz stadion, a single floodlight mast located in south-eastern corner was left as a tribute Gerhard Hanappi stadium.
